This course utilizes the dynamic process of theater games and acting technique to create narratives. We use brief writing exercises, improvisational theater games, character exercises and acting technique to create performance. When students have completed this course they will have laerned their own particular technique to generate written material. They will become adept at choosing what techniques to use at different junctures in their efforts to create plays, screenplays, characters and monologues. This course is designed for actors (or those with basic acting training) who want to create written word with a spontaneous, organic, and intuitive approach. This way of working taps in the subconscious for more complex characters and depper themes.
Improvisation For Beginners
Work focuses on Viola Spolin theatre games. Exploring playfulness, expressivemess and focus. Freeing the body through the use of sound and movement (Joseph Chaikin) and other warm ups. Beginning work builds a foundation of techniques concerning focus, finding the activity/action, space substance, sensory awareness, and finding the Who? What? Where? Musical improvisation used to introduce principles of ensemble.
Improvisation for Advanced Players
Continued development of performance skills and exploration of long form improvisation. Further advanced improvisation games learned to enhance player-to-player relationship, spontaneity, playfulness, theatricality and focus. A production can be presented to the public.
